Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone is a Young Adult contemporary book. The protagonist, Samantha, has OCD, but none of her popular best friends knows about it. But one day she meets Caroline, a girl who doesn’t care about her appearance and who seems to get Samantha as no one else before had. Caroline introduces her to Poet’s Corner, and for the first time in her life, the protagonist feels normal. However, every thing she believes in might be an illusion.

Samantha’s OCD is purely obsessive, but it affects her every day actions. Questioning every little thing can be exhausting and on top of it, she’s trying to hide her mental illness from her not-so-nice best friends. I related so much to the protagonist, because I too fear the loneliness and always try to appease my friends. Her character arc in the book was impressive and I admire her.

Caroline is such a good friend, though I would have prefered it if we could have been able to read more about her. Plus I liked her character and how she supported Samantha, she was the reason the protagonist came out more from her shell and decided to live better for herself.

Another character important to the story was AJ, he and Samantha knew each other since they were children and their relationship wasn’t a good one. How it changed to a friendlier one is relatable and it’s not rushed in any way. It happened through gradual steps as they came to know more and more about each other.

The writing style was really good and engaging, the characters were all well-rounded and the ‘power’ and ‘friendship’ system somehow true. I highly enjoyed the book and recommend it to all of you. I give Every Last Word 5 out of 5 stars.

  1. I had this book on my ereader since forever, or so it seems, but more time passes and less I felt like reading it, but I liked what you wrote about the relationships between the characters and now I am again intrigued by this book 🙂
